A Complex Web of Partnerships: Airbnb Debuts on Amex Travel While Expedia Remains a Core Engine

Two online travel heavyweights that are typically fierce competitors across the digital landscape are now appearing side by side within the ecosystem of American Express Travel, illustrating the increasingly intricate network of partnerships that defines the modern travel industry.
In a major development for the alternative accommodations sector, Airbnb became the exclusive vacation rental partner for American Express Travel. This landmark collaboration places more than one million unique listings directly into a newly created Homes tab on AmexTravel.com as well as the official Amex Travel app, significantly expanding the ways in which premium cardholders can book private accommodations using their preferred financial platform.
Yet, this high-profile integration exists alongside another foundational relationship that has powered American Express Travel for nearly a decade. Amex Travel also maintains status as one of Expedia Group’s most vital business-to-business partners. Expedia supplies the financial giant with a comprehensive suite of flights, hotels, and core technology services—a deeply embedded commercial relationship that dates back to 2015, when Expedia acquired Travelocity and assumed the operational framework supporting the platform.
Expedia’s burgeoning business-to-business division specializes in selling lodging inventories and broad travel components to major financial card issuers, commercial airlines, and traditional travel agencies. Within this business model, loyalty point redemptions are central to keeping cardholders engaged, making Expedia an essential engine behind the scenes of many consumer-facing rewards programs.
Despite the introduction of Airbnb as the exclusive home-sharing partner, American Express has emphasized that its long-standing operations with Expedia remain completely unaffected by the new integration.
"There’s no change to our existing business with Expedia," an American Express spokesperson told Skift.
The spokesperson further clarified the strategic motivation behind the new digital storefront, noting that the Airbnb partnership is specifically focused on broadening the company’s short-term rental offerings and giving cardmembers access to a diverse portfolio of properties that complement traditional hotel stays. By blending the inventory of a home-sharing pioneer with the established corporate infrastructure provided by legacy technology and travel suppliers, American Express is positioning its travel portal as a comprehensive one-stop shop for diverse lodging preferences.
