Riyadh Air Diverts Flights to Regional Airport Following Security Concerns in Saudi Capital

Saudi Arabia’s ambitious new carrier, Riyadh Air, has taken the unprecedented step of moving its flight operations away from its primary hub in Riyadh to a regional airport located a grueling four-and-a-half-hour drive away. The operational shift comes amid a backdrop of continuing security threats and attacks directed at the Saudi capital by Yemen’s Iran-linked Houthi movement.
Under the newly implemented contingency measures, the nascent airline is now landing its incoming passengers at Al Qassim regional airport, situated approximately 434 kilometers or 270 miles away from Riyadh. From there, passengers are transferred onto coaches for a lengthy bus ride to the capital city.
The disruption affects a key cross-section of the airline’s developing network. According to flight schedules and notices on the carrier’s official website, Riyadh Air services connecting the capital to major international and regional destinations—including Cairo, Jeddah, Dhaka, London, Lahore, and Islamabad—are now operating via Al Qassim airport.
To manage the massive logistical hurdle posed by the hundreds of miles separating the substitute airport from the capital, the airline has organized a fleet of coaches. Passengers arriving on these diverted flights are loaded onto free buses for the lengthy and exhausting trip to and from a designated staging ground in Riyadh, specifically utilizing the InterContinental Durrat Al Riyadh hotel as the primary transit and drop-off point.
The unusual arrangement has dramatically altered the travel experience for customers who booked with the carrier anticipating a seamless arrival at King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh. Instead, travelers face a multi-hour highway journey after touching down in the Al Qassim region.
According to information provided by the carrier, this logistical workaround is set to remain in place indefinitely. The airline has stated that the current routing and bus transfer operation will continue until Riyadh Air is able to safely and reliably resume flying directly out of King Khalid International Airport.
