If you are planning an upcoming vacation on a Carnival cruise ship and decide to prepay your gratuities ahead of time, you can soon expect a new addition to your onboard routine. Carnival Cruise Line has officially launched a pilot program that adds a distinctive sticker to passenger Sign & Sail cards, letting both crew members and fellow travelers know that tips have been settled in advance.

The initiative has quickly become a talking point across the fleet and throughout online cruise communities. Featuring the phrase "Crew love, I pre-paid my gratuities," the small sticker is being affixed directly to identification cards on select ships, including recent sightings aboard vessels like the Carnival Panorama.

Alongside the card modification, Carnival is also placing personalized thank-you notes inside staterooms for guests who choose to settle their service charges prior to embarkation. The printed message reads, "On behalf of our entire team, thank you for pre-paying your gratuities. Your support is greatly appreciated and helps recognize the many team members who work together to make your cruise vacation fun, memorable, and enjoyable. Thank you for choosing Carnival, and we trust that you’re having a wonderful cruise filled with fun, relaxation, and unforgettable moments!"

Carnival Cruise Line’s Brand Ambassador, John Heald, confirmed the rollout of the stickers to passengers, noting in an email that the initiative has just begun and that further details would be shared as the rollout progresses.

Carnival Cruise Line leadership emphasized that the program is designed to bridge the gap between guests and the personnel who look after them. In an official statement provided to cruise media, a company spokesperson explained the reasoning behind the new pilot project.

"The Carnival gratuity program is an important way guests recognize our hardworking team members and ensure that gratuities are shared among both guest-facing and behind-the-scenes crew who make great vacations possible," the spokesperson said. "Our team members provide great service to every guest. The ‘Crew Love’ stickers and thank-you notes are simply a way to let our crew know that a guest has prepaid their gratuities, while giving those guests a little recognition for their generosity. This is one component of a broader pilot, and we’re listening to feedback as we evaluate it."

What Carnival Guests Are Saying About the Sticker

While the cruise line frames the initiative as a gesture of appreciation and recognition, the public reaction among loyal passengers has been notably mixed, with a significant portion of cruisers expressing skepticism or outright disapproval on social media platforms.

Within popular fan-run Carnival Facebook groups, numerous regular cruisers have criticized the sticker, describing the visual label as tacky, cheesy, or juvenile. The public nature of displaying a tipping status has raised eyebrows among travelers who value privacy regarding their financial habits onboard.

Sheri C., a frequent Carnival cruiser, voiced her confusion over the rollout in an online forum, questioning the logic behind the decision. "What’s the point? Like, why do they think this is a good idea? I really can’t think of any logical reason behind this," she wrote.

Another cruiser, Cindy B., expressed deeper frustration with the direction of the cruise line, viewing the sticker as an unnecessary pressure tactic. "Childish on Carnival’s behalf. Trying to belittle people is crazy. Just because you don’t give money before you cruise. Thanks, but I will save the interest myself and pay when I get on the cruise. I am going to start looking at other cruise lines always been loyal to Carnival but am getting tired of all the changes and the attitude with them. They are going too far," she remarked.

Not all feedback has been negative, however. While many passengers stated they remained indifferent to the change, others welcomed the concept. Deanna M. posted online that she was "THRILLED" to see the cruise line implementing the visible acknowledgment for prepaid service fees. At the same time, a recurring sentiment among critics is that a passenger’s payment method for gratuities is a private matter that does not need to be broadcasted on an identification card worn around the neck or carried throughout the ship.

Gratuities on Carnival Cruise Ships

To understand the context of the new pilot program, it helps to examine how Carnival handles onboard tipping. Carnival Cruise Line currently charges $17 per person, per day for standard gratuities covering guests in inside, oceanview, and balcony staterooms. For passengers staying in suites, the daily gratuity rate is slightly higher at $19 per person, per day.

Guests have the flexibility to prepay these service charges anytime up to 11:59 p.m. on the day prior to their ship’s departure. Carnival maintains that 100% of collected gratuities are distributed directly to the crew members passengers interact with daily, such as stateroom attendants, dining room waiters, culinary staff, and the numerous behind-the-scenes workers who maintain the ship and enhance the overall vacation experience.

While prepayment is encouraged by the cruise line, passengers retain the policy option to adjust or remove daily gratuities while onboard by visiting Guest Services. Travelers choose to alter these charges for various reasons; some prefer to hand cash directly to specific crew members who provided exceptional service, while others may manage their onboard budgets differently. With the new "Crew Love" stickers currently being tested across the fleet, Carnival is closely monitoring guest responses to determine the future of the visible labeling program.
