The comprehensive deployment plan revealed by Carnival confirms that the Carnival Encounter and Carnival Splendor will spearhead a massive collection of 112 cruises departing from Australia across the 2028-2029 seasons. These voyages will operate as roundtrip journeys from the major eastern seaboard hubs of Sydney and Brisbane, offering holidaymakers an extensive selection of itineraries that showcase the natural beauty and vibrant cultures of the South Pacific, Far North Queensland, New Zealand, and Tasmania.
Among the standout offerings in the newly released program is a rare and highly anticipated solar eclipse cruise scheduled for July 2028. Sailing roundtrip from Brisbane aboard the Carnival Encounter, this specialty voyage will provide passengers with a front-row seat to a rare celestial event at sea. In addition to the eclipse voyage, the Carnival Encounter will introduce a brand-new 13-day itinerary connecting Brisbane to the scenic landscapes of New Zealand. Meanwhile, the Carnival Splendor is set to cater to sports and racing enthusiasts by operating a dedicated Melbourne Cup cruise departing from Sydney in November 2028, aligning with Australia’s most famous annual thoroughbred horse race.
To accommodate varying traveler schedules and preferences, the deployment includes 23 short three-day "getaway" cruises departing from both Sydney and Brisbane. These bite-sized voyages have historically proven popular among first-time cruisers and families seeking a quick weekend escape. Furthermore, the program features 18 dedicated voyages from Sydney to Tangalooma and Moreton Island. These specific itineraries offer guests the exclusive opportunity to book a picture-perfect beachfront cabana at the newly established Tangalooma Dunes Cabana Club. These private cabanas remain strictly reserved for Carnival guests during the ship’s visits to the island, adding an extra layer of privacy and relaxation to the tropical stopover.
The Carnival Encounter will also operate 12 sailings from Brisbane to the pristine coastal destination of Airlie Beach, serving as a gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Whitsunday Islands. Additionally, the ship’s culturally rich and historically inspired Mutiny on the Bounty cruise to Fiji will make a welcome return to the schedule. Between mid-2028 and mid-2029, the ship will also complete six standard voyages dedicated entirely to exploring New Zealand’s North and South Islands.
As part of the fleet’s ongoing maintenance and upkeep, the Carnival Splendor is scheduled to undergo a comprehensive dry dock refurbishment in August 2028. This period of technical modernization and aesthetic refreshing will ensure the vessel maintains Carnival’s high standards of comfort, safety, and entertainment before returning to service in the region.
Anton Loeb, Carnival Cruise Line Assistant Vice President of Sales and Marketing, emphasized the broad appeal of the upcoming schedule and the enduring popularity of the cruise line’s Australian operations. He noted that the 2028-2029 program is expected to resonate strongly with first-time cruisers, families, and groups of friends looking for a fun and high-value holiday option, encouraging travelers to secure their bookings early to avoid missing out on preferred cabins and sailings. Loeb also highlighted that Carnival continues to stand alone as the only major cruise line maintaining a continuous, year-round presence sailing in Australian waters. With this program release extending operations through mid-2029, the cruise line looks forward to delivering unforgettable holiday experiences for its passengers well into the future. All newly announced sailings from Carnival Cruise Line are currently open for public booking.
Farewell Cruises for Carnival Adventure and Carnival Luminosa
The departure of two ships from the region in 2028 will open up unique travel opportunities through a series of specialized repositioning cruises. These long-distance voyages allow adventurous travelers to experience multiple days at sea alongside exotic international ports of call as the vessels transition to their new North American homeports.
The Carnival Luminosa is scheduled to depart Sydney on March 15, 2028, embarking on a sprawling 23-day repositioning journey bound for Los Angeles, California. This remarkable transpacific crossing will feature 16 relaxing days at sea, allowing guests to fully enjoy the amenities of the ship while crossing vast expanses of the ocean. The itinerary includes culturally rich stops in Hawaii and French Polynesia, offering a blend of tropical exploration and extended relaxation. Along the way, passengers aboard the Carnival Luminosa will experience notable maritime milestones, crossing the International Dateline on the fifth day of the voyage and navigating across the Equator on day 13.
Meanwhile, the Carnival Adventure will offer a trio of distinctive itineraries designed to transport the vessel from its current operating base in Sydney all the way to Seattle, Washington. These transpacific and coastal journeys will provide guests with rare routing options and extended travel experiences as the ship transitions to the North American market.
